South Africa’s post-election renewable energy sector outlook
6 June 2019
South Africa’s 2019 election result, which saw the ANC win 57.5% of the total votes, is largely positive for investors. The picture would probably have looked very different had Cyril Ramaphosa not managed narrowly to secure the ANC presidency in December 2017, and replace Jacob Zuma as president in early 2018. President Ramaphosa’s new cabinet, which was announced on 29 May, includes a mix of long-serving ministers and new appointees. One significant change to cabinet is that the department of mineral resources has been combined with the department of energy under Minister Gwede Mantashe. But what do the election results and cabinet appointments mean for the long-awaited energy policy updates, such as the Integrated Resource Plan for Electricity (IRP), and, the renewable energy independent power producer procurement programme (REIPPPP)?
